⁍ Shop, The: Also known as The Department of Scientific Intelligence, The Shop are suspected to be a secret government with a wide reach and a wider range of interests. Ties have been drawn between The Shop and a number of incidents of illegal genetic modification, and still more tenuous connections have been made between the organization and a handful of seemingly unrelated, potentially paranormal catastrophes. The Shop were tasked with containing the superflu after the initial outbreak, but it is entirely apparent that any efforts they may have made were entirely in vain. It is unknown if any member of The Shop has survived the pandemic. Additional information is available here.
⁍ Superflu, The: An extremely deadly, genetically-modified strain of the influenza virus. Developed by the United States military, it was released by accident into the general population, resulting in an almost total global annihilation of the human species, as well as wide-scale decimation of other susceptible species: dogs, horses, guinea pigs, and monkeys. Only 0.6% of the human population is immune.
For those who contract the illness, the symptoms appear at first to be similar to the common cold: weariness, nasal congestion, sneezing, and so on. As the disease progresses, it causes skyrocketing fever, headaches, crippling physical pain, and delirium. In the latest stages, severe, grotesque swelling of the neck and face conspire with excessive mucous production to block the victim's airways, ultimately leading to death.
